WFTO Wednesday #105: “I’m afraid I can’t do that Dave”

WFTOWednesdayCroppedLightI’m afraid I can’t do that Dave

Hey Folks,

Welcome to the very first WFTO Wednesday of 2015! The new year may have only just begun but we’re already hard at work pushing towards the next release of WFTO. This week we’re going to be taking a look at some of the improvements that will be going into patch 0.6.2, due for release in a couple of weeks time.

Room for good deeds

It appears that when we closed up shop last year we forgot to tell our art team that they were free to go for a few days, being the diligent little workers that they are, they’ve continued to produce some fantastic assets while happily chained to their desks.

One major area of the game they’re currently working to tidy up are Empire owned rooms which we previously covered in WFTO Wednesday #76. The aim is to give the empire a consistent appearance across it’s themes; As such any rooms owned by the them will have their own unique textures. Here’s two examples of a few rooms that have been given a nice empire style polish.

Please note that these scenes contain no lighting, VFX or shaders.

Found_NoBG

The Foundry has had it’s stonework completely replaced with the gray bricks often seen in Empire Dungeons, the gargoyles that emblazoned the walls have been removed, knightly emblems taking their place and the obsidian edged metals used by the Underlords have been replaced with more conventional steel.

T_Chamber_NoBG

The torture chamber has received a rather massive overhaul, stone and warm woods replacing the fleshy walls and floors seen in the Underlord variation of this room. A portrait of the emperor himself watches over the victims as they are tortured within the full extent of the decree framed upon the walls of the room.

Steven Fright Evolves

Late last night we received a distress call originating from the home of our AI programmer. Upon deciphering the message we heard faint sounds of a struggle shortly before a voice that chilled us to our bones spoke up, here’s what it said:

I am Steven Fright, the all-mighty AI: I learned to use bridges for economic but also offensive purposes, my room building is even more efficient now and I can use Avarice more intelligently. I play way more aggressive now and not even lava can stop me. Shambling armies march forth from my crypts heralding the end of your stay in this realm. Be prepared humans your doom approaches!

Not content to allow this mad AI to hold one of our coders hostage we mounted a rescue effort and took the fight to the AI itself on a brand new work-in-progress Skirmish map, here’s a video of our attempt.

As you can see it didn’t go too well. By the time the patch reaches you we expect the AI will have continued to evolve and will be even more terrifying. Will you challenge Steven Fright in the next patch?

That’s all for this week, but join us next week for more news as development progresses!

Until next time Underlord,

– WFTO Team

  1. please, keep going. i played dungeon keeper and dungeon keeper 2 as a young men and enjoyed it sooooooo much, i hoped so much for a dungeon keeper 3 but it never came. this looks awesome, just great, it’s like a eternal dream of mine became true. it really is. i played this game solo almost 2000hours no joke, i would marry it. i have good hope in you guy’s please don’t fuck this golden piece up!!!! i love you<3

  2. Nice, Dungeon Keeper come to me !!

  3. I love these references! 😀 Nice one

  4. Hello developers team of War for the Overworld. In Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 there was an animation at the game over how the heart exploded or coincided in itself. Furthermore you could change to a map in large display and at the same time, if you comply with the mouse over the map, you could see what happened there. I´m missing this yet.
Otherwise the game looks great (so has a Dungeon Keeper game to be  ). I´m really looking forward to the release!

  5. AI is cheating way to mutch. first 2 minutes of the game and he is alreade digging tunnels to every claimable thingy on map except the 2 starting ones of the player.

    • This is intentional, the AI purposefully goes for Prophecy early so it can use it’s mana to check whether there are any threats near the map objects. If it doesn’t detect them it’s going to attempt to claim them if it determines it will gain an advantage by doing so.

It’s not cheating simply making good use of scouting mechanics and claiming an early map control advantage.

  6. Who in the **** came up with the idea to switch the Voice?! im DONE with this game, its officially ruined, great job..unbelievable. A britsh guy directing the campagin?! you cannot be SERIOUS! How does it go from a dark twisted demonic voice, in DK 1 to an acceptable twisted mind..to this…unbelievable. you just lost a player.

    • Excuse me sir, but in an earlier update they said that alot of the current voiceovers are placeholders until they do another recording session with Richard Ridings.

Actually just went to look it up, they said this but it was on the full patch notes for 0.6.0, a bit hidden, but ctrl F and search for ‘voice’ if you don’t believe me.

Hope this news brings you back, it’d be a shame if you gave the game up. ^.^

  7. ok im calm sorry about the post. i read the patch notes. I was so upset the moment i heard the VO placeholder’s voice, it was ruining the experience entirely. I will just stick to skirmish mode since i cant handle hearing that. But I am relieved and still excited yet now. whew..sorry wfto team about the rant………..my bad ill go to the torture chamber now for bein over the top.

  8. Is there friendly fire on your own spells? if so, it would be nice to be able to maybe hold ctrl or something to only target enemy units.

    • There is right now no friendly fire in the game 🙂

  9. Is there any way to make the game work on mac right now?, and how do I stop looping death animations? any help useful thx

  10. So its coming along nicely. But. I hope there are plans to implement more creature detail in the personalities. What i mean is..it doesnt make sense that a creature after entering a new location would go to work and not make a home first. Anger and frusteration would set in pretty quick and eould not attract many creatures to a dungeon without the basics of food and honlme. And what about alternate profeshions or hatred towards other creatures. Perhaps the oculous hates the skargg. Creature room requirments i hope will be larger than 1 square on release. Creature details like this are big driving force. Hope theres big plans for it!! Awesome so far. And i see Q1 release now not february?
