Description

Brightrock Games is a British independent game studio based in Brighton, UK, with a multinational core team of 15 people. Initially a small gathering of modders, enthusiasts and - most of all - gamers, the group first rallied under the banner of Subterranean Games, setting their sights o reviving a genre that AAA publishers had long neglected. United in a shared passion for the oft-overlooked dungeon management genre, Subterranean Games released War for the Overworld on PC, Mac and Linux in April 2015. With this critically acclaimed and successful game under their belt, the company name was updated to Brightrock Games to better reflect the team’s broadening horizons. Brightrock Games’ goal is to create genre-twisting strategy management games that tell engaging stories and push the medium forwards.

History

Early History

Brightrock Games first came into being as a small gathering of modders, enthusiasts, specialists and - most of all - gamers from all over the world. They rallied under the banner of Subterranean Games with their sights set on bringing to the industry what the AAA publishers had long neglected. United in their shared, burning passion for the oft-overlooked dungeon management genre, they set to work on War for the Overworld.

War for the Overworld

Subsequently the team launched the crowdfunding campaign for WFTO on Kickstarter, joining the ranks of Planetary Annihilation, Divinity: Original Sin and more as being among the first to use the platform for video game development. In total WFTO raised £260,000 through Kickstarter and PayPal crowdfunding, launching the team's ambitions to bring their game to the masses.

Early Access

After the success of the WFTO crowdfunding campaign the team began development in earnest, transitioning from voluntary and part-time development to a full-time schedule. With this new drive the project progressed rapidly, with weekly updates being distributed to both Kickstarter backers and the growing crowd of new fans flocking to the game. WFTO first released on Steam Early Access on May 15th, 2013.

Launch

In early 2015 the core team relocated to the UK to finish the game. WFTO v1.0 released on Steam on April 2nd, 2015. Although not without its issues the launch was a commercial success. The team has continued to support the game with ongoing patches, encompassing changes, fixes and many new features.

Reformation

In October 2015 the core team, which were now located in Brighton, UK, formed a new development company under the banner of Brightrock Games. This would allow the group to easily transition from the structures imposed by Subterranean, and to "grow up" in a sense. Although Subterranean Games would continue to exist as the publisher of WFTO, Brightrock would take over as the development team, continuing to maintain the game but also releasing new content like the Heart of Gold expansion. The team could now also explore exciting new projects.

Present Day

On April 20th, 2018, Brightrock Games released WFTO’s final expansion, The Under Games, alongside the free Patch 2.0, the biggest update yet. They sent the game out with a bang, with lots of new content and more tools for the community to make their own. Prior to this in October 2017, they released the game in China, expanding its market, and before that they released The Cynical Imp charity DLC in partnership with GamesAid. The team are now in maintenance mode for WFTO, while also developing their next game.
